Computer Running Slow? 3 Things to Try Before You Panic

by Zach’s Computer Services
Is your computer running slow? Here’s how to speed up a sluggish Windows PC with three easy steps from Tampa Bay’s trusted IT support team—before you call for repair.

1️⃣ Check Memory & Programs When Your Computer Is Slow

  1. Open the Start menu
  2. Type Task Manager and press Enter
  3. Type Task Manager
  4. In Task Manager, click the Memory column to sort by RAM usage.
End any apps or background processes using excessive memory. Too many open programs make a computer run slow.
  5. Sort Task Manager by Memory Usage

2️⃣ Free Up Hard Drive Space to Speed Up a Slow Computer

  1. Open the Start menu, type Storage settings, and press Enter
  2. Open Storage settings in Windows
  3. Click Temporary files under Storage
  4. Temporary files option
  5. Select files to delete (e.g., Recycle Bin, Downloads)
  6. Click Remove files and confirm.
  7. Remove files in Storage settings
  8. Close Settings when finished.
  9. Close Settings
Tip: A nearly full drive can make even new PCs run slow. Try to keep at least 20% of your storage free.

3️⃣ Restart Your PC to Fix Slow Performance

  1. Open the Start menu
  2. Start menu for restart
  3. Click the Power icon
  4. Power icon in Windows
  5. Select Restart
  6. Restart option
Restarting clears out memory leaks and frozen processes that make computers run slow.
